CADAS PANGERAN
Jalan Cadas Pangeran was built on the idea of Governor General Herman Willem Daendles, in 1809. In the construction of this road, General Daendles employed indigenous people, the Sumedang people. At the time of making the road, the people of Sumedang were employed as compulsory labor under Dutch command. Because this area is on the edge of a cliff with a deep ravine and steep terrain and rocky rock that is very hard not infrequently the indigenous workers experience great suffering. In fact, not a few are affected by malaria until death. And it is estimated that thousands of other people lost their lives while working on this road.
Cadas Pangeran's own story comes from the suffering of the people of Sumedang in the construction of this road. At that time the sad story reached the ears of the Sumedang regency authority at that time, namely Prince Kusumadinata IX or the more popular one, Prince Kornel. When Daendels came to monitor road construction, suddenly Prince Kornel arrived. At first Daendels was happy because he thought he had been warmly welcomed by the local authorities. Therefore, he was about to shake Prince Kornel's hand. However, the greeting was reciprocated by using the left hand and right hand wielding a dagger.
At that time Prince Kornel had protested Daendels' actions for treating the people of Sumedang arbitrarily. And finally in front of Prince Kornel, Daendels promised to continue the construction of the road by the Dutch troops and the people of Sumedang as a working reserve.
But that was only Daendels guile, after that he returned with his troops to attack Prince Kornel and his followers. What eventually occurred was a battle between Prince Kornel and the Dutch. Certainly, the victory was on the Dutch side who had a very capable instrument of war. Many people of Sumedang who died in this incident included Prince Kornel himself.
The heroic action of the Sumedang community with Prince Kornel can be interpreted as an act of symbolic resistance, or protest from the Sumedang community against the inhumane treatment of Governor General Herman Willem Daendels.
And to commemorate the courage of Prince Kornel who was willing to die to defend his people, now the road is named Jalan Cadas Pangeran. As well as a statue made with the statue of Prince Kornel located at the intersection of Jalan Cadas Pangeran. This statue depicts the event when Prince Kornel shook his left hand with General Daendels.
Behind the heroic story, it turns out there are some people who do not believe the occurrence of the Cadas Pangeran, because according to them it only comes from a story that was passed down for generations among Sumedang officials and the people. Even today the story is still being debated.
